Admin_History | The Catholic Standard newspaper was established in 1905 by the Society of Jesus. It was initially published monthly but since 1962 has been published on a weekly basis. During the presidency of Forbes Burnham, the Catholic Standard was for some time the only independent newspaper in Guyana. The newspaper and its editors (various Jesuit priests) came under intense pressure in the Burnham period; a number of libel suits were brought and printers refused to produce the paper. The paper is still in publication. |
