DescriptionThis collection contains Fr Steuart's personal papers including diaries he kept during his time as a military chaplain during World War 1, 1914-1916.
Admin_HistoryRobert Henry Joseph Steuart was born on 13 April 1874 in Reigate. He was educated at Fort Augustus (1883-1887) before being a military cadet at Woolwhich from March 1892 to February 1893.

He entered the Society of Jesus on 13 February 1893 and after a year as a junior did a year's philosophy at St Mary's Hall before spending two years (1897-1901) at Clarke's Hall (now Campion Hall) at Oxford where he studied mathematics. He then taught at Beaumont (1899-1901), at Wimbledon (until 1902) and for a year at Mount St Mary's. He did a second year of philosophy at Jersey and in 1903 went to St Beuno's. He completed his tertianship at Linz (1907-1908). From 1908 he taught at Stonyhurst.

In October 1916 until November 1919 he was military chaplain in the Highland Light Infantry and served in France and Germany during World War, 1914-1918.

After a few months at Liverpool he went to Oxford in February 1920, and in December 1921 he became Superior at St Aloysius. On 28 January 1926 he became Superior at Mount Street, London. From there he went to Wimbledon in January 1935 until May 1940 when he returned to Mount Street, where he remained until his death on 9 July 1948. He died at the Hospital of Our Lady of Consolation, Lambeth.
