Admin_HistoryAlphonse Pollet was born on the 8th of October 1931 to a Belgian father and South African-Dutch mother in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Alphonse was sent to St Aidan’s, a Jesuit school in Grahamstown, aged 8. At 20, he came to England to join the novitiate at Harlaxton. From 1958-60, as a scholastic he taught at St George’s, Salisbury, and St Mary’s Hall and Hodder. He then taught theology at Heythrop College, University of London. He was ordained in London in 1963, and a tertianship at St Beuno’s and a first posting to the parish staff at the Sacred Heart, Lauriston, Edinburgh followed. He moved to Stamford Hill in 1967 and became Superior and P.P. the following year. In 1973, the Provincial appointed him his assistant for Pastoral Works. In 1975, he was appointed Superior and P.P. at St George’s, Worcester, before returning to Stamford Hill in 1976, where he remained until 1981. He favoured pastoral work and devoted considerable time to work with schools in the Borough of Haringey, including St Ignatius’ and St Mary’s primary schools, Our Lady’s high school and St Thomas More’s comprehensive. He later found himself looking after a mission in Braamfontein, South Africa. He was recalled to Mount Street to be Minister, where he died a year later on 9th of April 1983 in his sleep.
