Admin_History | Brother John Long SJ was born on 18 November 1886 in Manchester. He served in Fr Bernard Vaughan SJ’s mass when he was young and started working as an accountant’s clerk in Manchester. He attempted to join the Society as a brother novice but left due to ill-health, before being readmitted, entering the society on 24 March 1909. He took his First Vows in 1911 and worked for a year at Manresa as an assistant infirmarian. He then was appointed infirmarian at Petworth the following year, where he remained for 55 years until 1967, known as a dedicated worker by colleagues. That year he moved to Holy Name, Manchester, integrating back into his home community. In his late 80s he retired to St Beuno’s, and died aged 93 at Nazareth House, Wrexham, on 18 February 1979. |
