Admin_History | Fr Thomas Coughlin SJ was born in Durham, England, on 26 September 1902. He grew up in Houghton le Spring near Durham and worked briefly as a brass moulder. He studied for two years at Osterley and then joined the Society aged 24 at Manresa on 7 September 1926. Following his tertianship, he had only two terms teaching at Wimbledon College as choirmaster before being called up to be an RAF chaplain in 1940 for 6 years’ service during the Second World War. Following demobilisation he taught at various institutions – a year at St John’s Beaumont, six years at Stamford Hill, three at Preston College, and one at Mount St Mary’s. He left teaching around 1958 and held various other posts, including a stint in charge of Besant House, Barbados. In 1970, he moved to St George’s, Worcester, where he remained for the rest of his life. By 1983 his health had begun to deteriorate, and he died on April 17th 1985. |
