| Admin_History | Fr Henry Widlake was educated at Wimbledon College. While at Heythrop, he was a keen sportsman. After his ordination, he went to St Francis Xavier, Liverpool, until 1947 and his tertianship. He then returned to Liverpool until his posting to Chishawasha, where he arrived in February 1950. There, he learnt Shona, and then spent some time at St Michael's, Mhondoro before going to Makumbi. He was in charge of the outschools and the material work of the mission. He installed loud speakers and a neon cross on the outside of the church, and spent most of his time with the village schools. When the territory was split in 1964, he became the resident priest in Bindura. He was very fond of swimming, and one day was bitten by a crocodile. As a source of additional income, he repaired watches and taught Shona at Salisbury Polytechnic. |
