TitleSword belonging to William Roper (1495-1578)
Date16th century
LevelItem
DescriptionMetal sword with leather scabbard.

The sword was accompanied by the following museum caption:

'William Roper was the son-in-law of St. Thomas More married to his daughter Margaret (Meg). Although for a time he was a Lutheran, he returned to the Catholic faith and supported Catholics in England financially. He also assisted int the publication of book and aided the foundation of the English College in Douai for the training of priests. Roper was the first biographer of St. Thomas More. His life of the saint, written after his death, gives many glimpses of the More household and of the words and thoughts of St Thomas More as he approached death. The vivid description of the last encounters of Meg and her father suggest he may possibly have been present'.
