Description | The Biafran War, or the Nigerian Civil War, was fought between the Nigerian government and the secessionist state of Biafra in South-East Nigeria between 1967 - 1970. As the main Marist communities in Orlu, Enugu and Uturu were located within Biafra the Brothers, along with many other Religious operating in the area, were caught up in the fighting. At the end of the War once the Nigerian government had regained control of the region, several Brothers were charged with illegally entering Nigeria (as their papers featured official Biafran and not Nigerian stamps) and of aiding the Biafran rebels. Some were sentenced to 6 months' hard labour although diplomats intervened before the sentences could begin and all Brothers were deported back to the United Kingdom and Ireland.
