Description
This photograph shows a smiling Bishop MacPherson in a head and shoulders pose, standing in front of striped curtains, and wearing his pectoral crucifix; Bishop MacPherson was born in Lochboisdale, South Uist on 5th August 1917, the son of a schoolmaster; he was ordained a priest in Rome on 23rd March 1940 and was consecrated Bishop of Argyll and the Isles in St Columba's Cathedral, Oban on 6th February 1969, the first Gaelic-speaking island bishop since the Reformation; Bishop MacPherson died on 24th March 1990 aged 72, the day after the golden jubilee of his ordination.
