Description
This old photograph shows Father Allan McDonald, who was given charge of the mission of Daliburgh in South Uist, sitting outside what appears to be his church, with a Miss Murphy sitting beside him reading a book; Father Allan was born in Fort William on 25th October 1859 and was ordained in Glasgow in 1882; in July 1884 he was given charge of the mission of Daliburgh in South Uist and was responsible for building a new church there to replace the old thatched building; he died at Eriskay on 8th October 1905 aged only 45; full details of Father McDonald's life can be found in his obituary on pp 254 to 260 of The Catholic Directory for 1906.
