Description | This photograph shows Cardinal Gray in his robes of Archbishop [presumably taken on the day of his appointment as Archbishop in 1951] at the door of a church [presumably St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh]; Cardinal Gray was born in Leith, Edinburgh in 1910 and was ordained to the priesthood on 15th June 1935; he was appointed as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 1951, a position which he held until his retirement in 1985, a period of 34 years; in 1969, he became the first resident Scottish Cardinal in Scotland since the Reformation; he died in Edinburgh on 19th July 1993, aged 82; full details of Cardinal Gray's life can be found on pp 430 to 436 of The Catholic Directory for Scotland for 1994. |
