Description
Small stone memorial tablet commemorating Rev John Joseph Wheble (1824-1854), who was buried at Balaclava.
John Joseph Wheble was born at Woodley Lodge, Sonning, Berkshire in 1824, the son of James Wheble and Mary O'Brien. He was one of the first Catholic Chaplains officially appointed by the British Army and served during the Crimean War. He died of dysentry at Balaklava on 3 November 1854, where he is buried. The inscription on the stone tablet reads 'Orate pro animo R.D.Joannis J. Wheble Sacerdotis Obiit die 3 Novembris 1854. Requiescat in pace'. The word 'Bala-Clava' is inscribed on the base of the tablet. The main inscription is surmounted by a cross and a dove, with minaret towers on either side. It is not known where the memorial was originally held, or who donated it to the Diocesan Archives.
