Description
The Executive Committee of Sword of the Spirit was first elected at a meeting held at Archbishop's House, Westminster on 1 August 1940. Cardinal Hinsley was nominated as President and Christopher Dawson its Vice-President. The first Chairman was to be Paul Kelly of the Plater Club, a Catholic society which met to discuss the Church's social teaching and its relevance to questions of the day. Barbara Ward was initially appointed as Secretary to the Sword, but she was soon joined in this office by Professor A C F Beales as administrator, together with his wife, Freda.
The Executive Committee met for the first time on 2nd August and drew up a summary of the aims and objectives of Sword of the Spirit, to unite the country in supporting Christian principles of international freedom and order against totalitarianism and to base the future reconstruction of Europe after the War on these Christian principles.
Meetings of the Committee were first held weekly in an office in Manya Harari's flat in Gloucester Place. At the 3rd meeting, Laetita Fairfield announced that a series of 7 pamphlets on Nazism was already underway, with the Ministry of Information planning to print 400,000 of each, although without the Ministry's imprint and with the Sword covering the cost of distribution.
