DescriptionMgr Canon John Longstaff was born on 7 February 1913. Educated at St George's, Weybridge, and St Edmund's College, Ware, he was ordained on 11 June 1938. His first appointment was as a Curate at Kenton, where he served until 1941. He was then appointed Chaplain at Westminster Cathedral, where he helped with the choir and in playing the organ, as well as other administrative duties due to the wartime shortage of lay clerks. From 1948, he served as a Curate, first at Waltham Cross and then at Corpus Christi, Maiden Lane, where he also worked as Chaplain to Charing Cross Hospital. He was appointed as the first Diocesan parish priest for Hoddesdon in 1958, where he went on to build the new church. From 1965 until his retirement in 1983, he was parish priest at Cadogan Street. He also worked as Financial Secretary for the Diocese. After his retirement to the Cathedral, he was entrusted by Cardinal Hume with the care of the retired clergy. A keen artist, particularly oil painting, some of his works were exhibited and sold. He died on 28 April 1986, aged 73. According to his obituary in the 1987 Westminster Year Book (pp122-123), his one regret during his last weeks in hospital was having to miss the ceremonies of Holy Week for the first time in his life. The Papal Bull relatingh to Canon John Longstaff was donated by the parish priest at Hoddesdon in 2019.
