Description
Papers donated to the Diocesan Archives by Fr John Raphael Alan Francis Lightfoot-Seabrook, former RAF Chaplian and latterly Parish Priest for St Joseph, Grove Park.
John Francis Lightfoot-Seabrook was born in Beckenham, Kent on 5 August 1947. He was educated at Shoreditch Comprehensive School, then went on to work in a bank from 1966 - 1968 before becoming an Assistant Examiner for 3 years in an Estate Duty Office. Although his family were not Catholic, Fr John became interested in the faith as a teenager. He formally converted to Catholicism in 1968 when he was baptized at St Monica’s, Hoxton, and went on to study at St Edmund’s College and at Heythrop College, gaining the award Bachelor of Divinity in 1975.
Following his ordination to the priesthood at St Mary’s Priory Church, Hoxton on 4 August 1976 by Cardinal Basil Hume (the first priest to be ordained by the Cardinal), he was appointed Assistant Priest at Willesden, from 1976-1979. He then served briefly as Assistant Priest at Moorfields before moving to North Finchley, where he served as Assistant Priest from 1979-1982. During this time he attended an extra-mural course on psychology given by the Workers Education Association and London University. In 1982, Fr John applied to serve as a Chaplain in the Royal Air Force (RAF). He served in various locations from 1982 to 1991. In 1991 he was appointed Parish Priest at Isleworth where he remained until 1994. He then went to Welwyn Garden City, Digswell as Parish Priest until 1999 when he was appointed to Grove Park. This was to be his last appointment.
From the summer of 2019 Fr John’s health began to significantly deteriorate. He died peacefully at Hammersmith Hospital on 15 April 2020 and his funeral, presided over by Bishop Nicholas Hudson, took place on 7 May at Chiswick New Cemetery. There is an obituary for him on pp212-213 of the Westminster Year Book 2021.
