DescriptionLetters between Manning and Mgr Thomas Capel.
Admin_HistoryThomas John Capel (1836-1911) was something of a celebrity in Victorian London famous for his high profile conversions, in particular that of the Marquis of Bute. He was satirised by Disraeli in his novel Lothair under the guise of Mgr Catsby. He was chosen by Manning to be Rector of the Catholic University College in Kensington but later fell from grace following a series of accusations of immoral conduct, financial irregularity and drunkenness. These matters avoided widespread public knowledge and Mgr Capel was, following a series of appeals to Rome, allowed to go into effective exile in the United States. Following a series of accusations of a similar nature there he was suspended a divinis and ended his days living on a ranch near Sacramento. The letters in this sub sub series relate primarily to these accusations and Mgr Capel's appeals and include the papers of the Diocesan Commission of Investigation.
