TitleHidden Springs; or, Perils of the Future and How to Meet Them. Words spoken by Archbishop [Roger] Vaughan at the opening of The Catholic Guild Hall, Sydney, 1876.

DescriptionRoger William Bede Vaughan (1834 – 1883) was the brother of Cardinal Herbert Vaughan. He was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney from 1877 until his death in 1883. He first came to Sydney in 1873 to serve Archbishop John Bede Polding (1794-1877) as coadjutor. Archbishop Vaughan, like his brother Herbert, was particularly concerned with promoting education based on Catholic principles. His address on the opening of the Catholic Guild Hall in Sydney was a bitter attack on the Freemasons in New South Wales, who campaigned for secular, non-denominational education in direct opposition to Roger Vaughan's own position on the subject. The pamphlet, published by Edward F. Flanagan, Dublin House, Sydney, is inscribed on the cover 'From R. B. V.' , and was presumably a gift from Roger Vaughan to his brother Herbert.
