TitleThe elevation of Archbishop Francis Bourne to Cardinal at the Rome Consistory 1911
Date1911
LevelItem
DescriptionBlack and white image depicting Archbishop Bourne at the 1911 consistory at the Vatican, Rome. The consistory in Rome was the formal ratification of the Pope's nomination of eighteen new members of the Sacred College of Cardinals. The initial consistory meeting was only attended by the Pope, the cardinals resident in Rome, as well as the visiting cardinals. Archbishop Francis Bourne was included in the list of new cardinals and can be seen in the middleground of the image seated in a row with other newly created cardinals who all appear to be wearing biretta hats and white fur ceremonial capes over taffeta silk cloaks. This image was probably taken during the public consistory ceremony during which, the newly appointed cardinals were bestowed with their red biretta hats. (online sources: Sacramento Daily Union, Volume 162, Number 28, 28 November 1911 and Daily Telegraph & Courier (London) Tuesday 28 November 1911, https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/) A row of young priests can be seen seated at the feet of the newly appointed cardinals, while members in the background look on. The reverse side of the image reads 'Rome Consitory 1911'.
