TitleBethnal Green, Our Lady of the Assumption
LevelSeries
DescriptionThe Parish of Bethnal Green was founded in 1901 when Cardinal Vaughan, Archbishop of Westminster, invited the Assumptionists (Augustinians of the Assumption), to establish themselves in the Diocese, after they had been subjected to religious persecution in France and came to the UK in 1899. Their Superior, Fr. Picard, decided that the Augustinians should inaugurate their work in a poor parish, so their first mission was opened in Bethnal Green in 1901.

They were assisted in their work by the Little Sisters of the Assumption, established at 111 Bow Road. Mrs. Florence Cotrell Dorme and Mr. Clement Cotrell Dorme financed the building of a new church in Bethnal Green, designed by Mr Edward Goldie, who built several other Catholic churches. On 6 November 1911, the foundation stone for the new church was laid by Cardinal Bourne, Archbishop of Westminster, and on 22 June 1912, the first Mass was celebrated by the Superior General of the Assumptionists, Fr Emmanuel Bailly, in the presence of Cardinal Bourne.

In June 1962, the church was consecrated on its Golden Jubilee by His Eminence, Cardinal Godfrey and his Lordship Bishop Laurence Craven, assisted by Monsignor Gordon Wheeler, Monsignor Stephen Shaw, and Assumptionists Superior General, Fr Wilfrid Dufault.
