TitleMuch Hadham Sharing Agreement
Date1974-1984
LevelFile
DescriptionThe file contains correspondence and other documentation relating to the Sharing Agreement between between the Anglican church of St Andrew's and the Roman Catholic church of Holy Cross, Much Hadham. It also contains correspondence relating to a proposal to lease the Anglican church of St Thomas, Perry Green, to allow Holy Cross to free up space to house a local Health Centre.

In 1982, the Anglican Rector of Much Hadham, Michael MacAdam, offered to share the Church of England parish church of St Andrew's with the congregation of Holy Cross, when the latter were left without a place of worship pending the completion of a new church building after the demolition of their old church.

The visit of Pope John Paul II to England in May that year, and his ecumenical visit to Canterbury Cathedral and other centres of worship, inspired Canon MacAdam to ask if the sharing arrangement between St Andrew's and Holy Cross could be made a legal and permanent one. Although the foundations for the new Catholic church had already been laid, it was agreed that construction should be suspended pending the outcome of consultations with both congregations. Secret ballots were held and both congregations voted for a permanent sharing arrangement through joint ownership under the Sharing of Church Buildings Act 1969.

The Agreement was signed in 1984, and work on the new church of Holy Cross ceased. Today, the Priest’s House stands alongside what was originally intended to be the site of the Church of The Holy Cross.
