| Description | Correspondence relating to Rev Henry Augustus Rawes, Superior of the Oblates of St Charles, St Mary of the Angels, Westmoreland Road, Bayswater, and the care given to him in his final illness. The letters, addressed mainly to Fr Thomas Dillon in Bayswater, comprise daily reports from those caring for Fr Rawes in Brighton., as well instructions from Fr Rawes, written in 1879, regarding the grave he had purchased in the cemetery of St Mary Magdalene, Mortlake. Correspondents include Mr Douglas Hope, Fr Joseph S Tasker, and Rawes' physician, Dr J R Gasquet, a specialist in the treatment of mental illness. The letters make it clear that Fr Henry Augustus Rawes was suffering from a serious depressive illness. He was on the point of being transferred to hospital at Burgess Hill when he died, probably from physical complications arising from his illness, on 24 April 1885. |
