TitleCorrespondence relating to the Rawes family
Date1885-1913
LevelFile
DescriptionThis file relates primarily to two of Rev Henry Augustus Rawes' sisters, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Blackburn Rawes (1835-1890) and Mary Isa Rawes (1828-1896). The correspondence deals with the illness and death of Rev Henry Augustus Rawes in 1885, and the aftermath, including the continued administration of the Rawes Trust by Fr Thomas Dillon. This comprised payments to Elizabeth Blackburn Rawes and Mary Isa Rawes until their deaths in 1890 and 1896 respectively. Many of the letters are addressed to Fr Dillon from Madame Elizabeth Devestel, the Superior of the Institut St Joseph, Erps-Querbs [Erps-Kwerps], Cortenbergh [Kortenberg], Belgium, where Mary Isa Rawes was being cared for, possibly for a mental health condition. The file includes a copy of the Agreement establishing the Rawes Trust, signed by Frances Rawes (mother of Rev Henry Augustus Rawes), Frances Ann Rawes, Elizabeth Ann Rawes, Henry Augustus Rawes, Henry Edward Manning, Herbert Vaughan, Charles Denny and Robert Butler. Other correspondents include Scottish solicitor M J Brown and London-based solicitors Gasquet and Metcalfe, who were dealing with the assessment of the estate and death duties after Elizabeth Blackburn Rawes died in 1890. Thomas Lendon Merriman, who together with his wife, Jane, appears to have been a close friend of the family, is also included in the correspondence.
