DescriptionAn illustration of the facade of Manor House, Finchley drawn in black ink on white card. Image size 195 mm x 247 mm.
This is the manor house for the Bibbesworth estate, and is Finchley's principal manor house. The original manor is first mentioned in 1253, but was destroyed by fires during the 15th and 16th centuries, and was subsequently rebuilt after both ocurrences. The only Lord on record associated with the manor house isWilliam Hastings ( Lord Hastings) whose family held the manor until 1527. In 1502 the moated construction comprised of a substantial messuage, an orchard, and a building within the moat, while a great barn and long stable existed outside the moat. The existing building was constructed in 1723 by the Allen family, and is located on East End Road, Finchley. The last person to hold the manor was Edward Cooper Arden in 1936. The building was used as a boys school between 1819 and 1857 and between 1863 and 1882, it was the residence of magistrate, George Plucknett, who used the main hall to hear cases. Between 1921 and 1981, the manor house was acquired by the Sisters of Marie Auxiliatrice and was used as a girls school.
