Description
A black and white framed photograph of Derwent House which was purchased in 1925 as a site for a new Church. The convent chapel of the Sisters of Marie Auxiliatrice had previously been used as a temporary church until funds for a permanent site could be acquired. Derwent House was purchased for £4,600 and was located on Regents Park Road, at its junction with East End Road. The three ground floor rooms were redesigned to create a new chapel which could comfortably accommodate 150 people, while the top floor was used as a residence for the parish priest. The new chapel was blessed on 2 September 1925, while the entire building was blessed by Cardinal Bourne on Sunday, 8 November 1925. The Cardinal inaugurated the Church of St Philip the Apostle on the same day. Image size 165 mm x 215 mm.
