The photograph shows Cardinal John Heenan, speaking from the pulpit.. It is possible that the occasion was to commemorate the 1,300 anniversary of the first National Synod, held at Hertford in 672. The church is shown plainly decorated prior to a restoration of its original 19th century colour scheme in the 1990s.
