| Description | The Hon. Gilbert Talbot (1673–1743), 13th Earl of Shrewsbury and 13th Earl of Waterford, was the second son of the 10th Earl of Shrewsbury. He inherited his title from his first cousin, Charles Talbot (1660-1718). Gilbert Talbot was in the Holy Orders of the Church of Rome at the time he inherited his cousin's title and estate. On Gilbert's death the titles passed to his nephew, George Talbot (1719–1787), the fourteenth Earl. The papers called into question whether Gilbert Talbot was permitted to inherit the estate from his cousin under Canon Law, and whether his order, the Society of Jesus, should stand to benefit from the inheritance |
