DescriptionIt is assumed that the majority of photographs, maps, drawings and illustrations in this collection were created by Cary-Elwes during his time in Guyana (1909-1924), or during the drafting of his autobiography, [1934-1945]. The photographs were divided into the following topics by Cary-Elwes: Georgetown, Morawhanna, Essequibo, St. Ignatius, St. Aloysius (Tipuru), Potaro, Koituok, Waipa - St. Francis Xavier, St Maria etc, Roraima and Seramang, Wapishanas, Taruma and Wai-wai, Surinam (Dutch Guyana), Drawings, and Surveys of Rivers. The topics have been preserved as Cary-Elwes intended.

Fr. Cary-Elwes also compiled two indexes to the photographs and to their intended position in his autobiography (see SJ/1/1/2/6-7). Most of the photographs in the index were given a reference number by Cary-Elwes. His draft autobiography was annotated with this number to indicate its intended position in the text. The reference numbers have been entered into the description of each photograph.
