| Admin_History | Fr Hugh Peter Lyons SJ was born on 12 September 1912 at Gorakhpore, Uttar Pradesh, India, in the diocese of Allahabad. He was educated at the Christian Brothers School at Naini Tae, then (with a short spell at Blackrock, Dublin) at the Edinburgh Institute for the last three years (1926-1929).
He joined the Novitiate at Roehampton in on 22 October 1929. Following this, he went on to Heythrop in 1933 for Philosophy and then as a Scholastic at Beaumont (1936-1939) and becoming a teacher. His Theology at Heythrop College (1939-1943) was during World War II and he was later ordained at Farm Street Church on 19 July 1942 by Archbishop Godfrey. Following his ordination, Fr Lyons did his Tertianship after his fourth year acting as Socius to the Master of Novices. He was appointed to the post of Master of Novices himself in August 1944, but after a year, he became a member of the Farm Street Church staff.
Fr Lyons did a biennium in theology, studying for a doctorate at Louvain in Belgium, before settling down to a longer stint as professor of dogma from 1949 to 1959. In August of this last year he went to Weston College, Scholasticate of the New England province for a year in exchange, but seems to have stayed two years, returning to lecture at Heythrop in 1961.
In 1965, Fr Lyons moved to Ontario, Canada for three years to teach theology at Regis College, Willowdale. In 1968, he returned to England, becoming a member of the Farm Street staff for 12 years. He moved to Southwell House a year before his death, and died on the 4 September 1981. |
