Admin_HistoryBr Richard Pope SJ was born in Liverpool, 13 December 1896. He served three years in the First World War and later worked as a clerk for a year or so, likely in a shipping firm. He entered the Society of Jesus as a Novitiate at Manresa House, Roehampton, on 14 August 1920. He took his final vows on 15 August 1932.

He was Sacristan at Stonyhurst (1922-23), Ad Dom at Mount St Mary’s School, Spinkhill, near Sheffield, Ad Dom and later Refectorian at St Beuno’s (1924-29), and Ad Omnia at Wimbledon College (1922-23). Br Pope then served as assistant Refectorian at Liverpool (1936-39), in various capacities at Beaumont College (1940-32), Sacristan again at Stonyhurst (1942-43); Ad Dom at Wimbledon (1943-46) and Rainhill in Merseyside from 1944 to 1947.

From 1947 to 1955 he was in Preston at St Walburge’s Church and regularly visited St Wilfrid’s Church to meet with younger priests and scholastics. During this time Br Pope worked with teenagers in the youth club at St Walburge’s.
From 1955 to 1958 he was back at Mount St Mary’s, followed by four years at St Aloysius’, Oxford. Following this, he went to St Francis Xavier’s, Liverpool, from 1972 to 1977. For the last five years of his life he moved to St John’s Convent, Kiln Green, Reading where he was cared for by the sisters until his death on 5 August 1982.
