| Admin_History | William Cuthbert Donnelly, known as Cuthbert or 'Cuth', was born in Liverpool on 12 May 1901. Donnelly was educated at St Francis Xavier College in Liverpool and entered the Society of Jesus on 7 September 1918. He completed his noviceship at Roehampton before studying Philosophy at St Mary's Hall and, from 1925 to 1928, English Literature at Campion Hall in Oxford. Following this, Donnelly taught English at St Francis Xavier College in Bombay [Mumbai] between 1928 and 1930. Donnelly returned to England to study Theology at Heythrop. He was ordained priest in his fourth year on 10 February 1934. He completed his tertianship at St Beuno's.
Fr Donnelly's career was largely concerned with education, particularly the education of Jesuit seminarians. Between 1933 and 1965, Fr Donnelly lectured at Heythrop College. Throughout his career, Donnelly primarily lectured in Philosophy although the variety of his teaching postings around the world ensured he was more than capable of lecturing on many subjects. He had short teaching interludes at Manresa Training College (1950-1954), St Francis Xavier College in Mumbai (1954-1955) and De Nobili College in Pune, India (1962). His final teaching assignment was at the seminary in Chishawasha in Rhodesia [Zimbabwe] from 1965 until 1977.
On the grounds of ill-health and his increasing frailty, Fr Donnelly returned to England in 1977. There he died in London on 15 April 1977.
