Admin_History | According to the Province Register, James Chesnell was born 22 May 1857 in Brighton. He entered the Society of Jesus 7 September 1875 at Manresa House, Roehampton to become a Brother. In 1876 Chesnell was sent to carry out domestic work at the College of St Ignatius, London (i.e. the community attached to Farm Street Church), and in 1880 at Roehampton. From 1881 to 1883 he is listed at Stonyhurst as 'Cur. val.', short for curat valitudenem, 'Caring for his health.' Chesnell left the Society 28 January 1884. The letter at SJ/X/6/2 indicates that his poor health was an impediment, and possibly the reason for his leaving the Society. |
