DescriptionIn the early 1970s first contacts were made with the University of Southampton with a view to obtaining validation of theological courses. The first students entered for the University of Southampton Certificate in Theology in 1974. In 1983 full-time students entered the Bachelor of Theology single subject Honours and Ordinary degree programme for the first time. The B. Th. was offered in four separate colleges (Chichester Theological College, Salisbury and Wells Theological College, La Sainte Union College of Higher Education, and St. John's Seminary, Wonersh). In 1985 St john's began a six-year part-time equivilent course for students not training for the ordained ministry. The association of colleges involved in teach the B Th later became known as the University of Southampton School of Theology and Religion.

By the late 1990s, things had changed at Southampton University and they felt that they could no longer support a theological degree.
