| Description | Letter from James Raine (1830-1896), originally accompanying a copy of a book on "St. Cuthbert" written by his father, James Raine (1791-1858) an Anglican priest, antiquary and historian.
James Raine senior was appointed librarian to the Dean and Chapter of Durham in 1816 and held this post until his death. In 1827 he excavated St Cuthbert's shrine to investigate whether or not his body was incorrupt. |
