DescriptionWalter Thornton Andrews (1879-1941) was born in Nagasaki, Japan. His father Walter Andrews (1852-1932), was the Anglican Bishop of Hokkaido. W T Andrews also became a vicar and worked in Cornwall and other places.

The notebook contains an illustrated 'Anglican's Alphabet'; illustrated poem 'A Tale Re-told' about the 'Good Ship Anglican'; letter to 'Dearest Laddie' from 'loving Dad', encouraging him [W T Andrews] to enjoy his learning; watercolour sketches of flowers and birds.

During World War I, W T Andrews joined the Artists' Rifles. A second notebook has been pasted within the first. It is labelled 'Reminiscences of a Varied Life by W. T. A'. It contains a typescript account of Andrews' memories of childhood in Japan, written in 1917, when he was at Hazeley Down Camp, Winchester. The documents also include detailed, annotated sketches of landscapes and maps, made during army training; pen and ink drawings of Winchester Cathedral.

Loose inserts include a part of a letter from Bishop Andrews at St. Peter's Vicarage, St. Leonards-on-Sea to Fr. Robert Andrews. The letter has a detailed description of a map of Nagasaki and originally accompanied a copy of the map.

Note: Bishop Andrews lived for 40 years in Japan, only reluctantly returning at the outbreak of World War I. He was later vicar of St. Bartholomew’s Chichester, 1918. and vicar of St. Peter’s, St. Leonards-on-Sea, 1920. He died in 1932.
