Date1892 - c 2009
LevelSeries
DescriptionMaterial within this series refers to St. Anne's Church, where the Brothers lived 1852 - 1934, and several schools which are connected through renaming and amalgamation. The Brothers initially taught boys of all ages at St. Anne's Roman Catholic School (sometimes referred to as Spicer Street school) before teaching boys aged 11 - 15 after the street where the school was located was renamed Buxton Street. From 1863 onwards, primary children of both sexes were taught by the Marist Sisters. In the early 1950s schools in the Westminster Diocese were reorganised into the two groups of primary and secondary level. Secondary pupils from nearby schools were placed into 'St. Anne's Secondary Modern' on Wood Close, Bethnal Green, and Brother Daniel became the headteacher. In 1959, due to the pupils now coming from a number of parishes, the name was changed to St. Gregory the Great Secondary Modern. In 1964, the school amalgamated with the Bishop Challoner Secondary School to become St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Secondary Comprehensive school.
