Description | The 'Old Juniorate' (1891 - 1939) was located opposite the Mount St. Michael/St. Joseph's College compound, in the old infirmary buildings that originally had been used as a novitiate and boarding school in 1875-1876. The location is variously referred to as Nithbank, St. Michael Street, 'near Dock Park' and 'Pumping Lane'. In 1939, the War Department required the use of the old infirmary property and so the Juniorate was moved to Hetland House near Carrutherstown, 8 miles outside of Dumfries. After the War, the Brothers continued to own the property at Nithbank. Parts of the property were leased by Florida Cream Ices company until the late 1950s, before the buildings were demolished by the town council in order to construct residential buildings in the 1960s.
