TitleSt Mary's Church/The Immaculate Conception Church, Stonehaven, Diocese of Aberdeen
Date[9 July 1938]
LevelItem
DescriptionThis postcard, dated 9th July 1938, was sent on that date by Rev William Murdoch to a Mr Peter Anson at Macduff; Rev Murdoch was the resident priest at that time of the Immaculate Conception Church in Stonehaven, which was built in 1877; you will read in his message that he was leaving Stonehaven for the Braes of Glenlivet; the postcard is entitled "The Sanctuary, St Mary's Catholic Church, Stonehaven" and the photograph on the front shows the altar area of the church; the name "St Mary's" is at odds with the name listed in The Catholic Directory for 1938 which is "The Immaculate Conception"; however, the current listing in The Scottish Catholic Directory for 2009 shows the church in Stonehaven is indeed called The Immaculate Conception and interestingly the postal address is listed as St Mary's in Stonehaven; as at 2009, the estimated Catholic population of The Immaculate Conception Church is 870.
