DescriptionThis photograph shows the altar area of a church [recognisable as possibly the Sacred Heart Church in Lauriston, Edinburgh] with clergy and altar boys seated on either side of the altar; Cardinal Gray can be seen seated on the left, with a priest speaking in the pulpit to his left; the first few pews are visible, filled with clergy; Cardinal Gray was born in Leith, Edinburgh in 1910 and was ordained to the priesthood on 15th June 1935; he was appointed as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 1951, a position which he held until his retirement in 1985, a period of 34 years; in 1969, he became the first resident Scottish Cardinal in Scotland since the Reformation; he died in Edinburgh on 19th July 1993, aged 82; full details of Cardinal Gray's life can be found on pp 430 to 436 of The Catholic Directory for Scotland for 1994.
