DescriptionPapers of John Winder in his role as president of the English College in Lisbon (1943-1947), mostly correspondence with bishops and archbishops of the English hierarchy, and cardinals in Rome, about his attempts to improve the financial situation of the college and the difficulties he faced in attracting students. The papers highlight the effects of the Second World War and its aftermath on student numbers, and the various proposals Winder put forward to remedy the situation, including a plan to allow Ukrainian and American students to train at Lisbon.
Admin_HistoryJohn Michael Winder was born in Walworth on 24 November 1890. He studied at Wonersh from 1904 before transferring to the English College in Lisbon in 1908 to study Philosophy and Theology where he was ordained in 1916. He returned to England, serving in Clapham, Bromley and Greenwich, before returning to Lisbon as a professor from 1919 until 1933. Thereafter he worked as a parish priest in Sheerness and Burgess Hull until his appointment as president of Lisbon College in 1943. He returned to England four years later as parish priest of Catford. He died in February 1956.
