| Admin_History | Maher was born in Bristol 30 March 1823, educated at Stonyhurst College, and entered the Society at Hodder, 7 September 1841. He took his BA degree at London University in 1846 and was professed of the four vows 15 August 1860. After teaching and studying at Stonyhurst, he was sent to the College of the English Province of Malta in 1849, where he spent four years as Prefect and Master. Maher studied theology at St Beuno's College, and was ordained priest in 1856. In the following year he was Minister at Mount St Mary's College and in 1859 a missioner in Londonm chiefly engaged in giving public and private missions and retreats. In 1868 Maher became Spiritual Father at Stonyhurst College and in 1869 missioner in Liverpool. He returned to London in 1872, and died in Paris 19 July 1877 on his way to the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, where he was seeking aid for an illness. His Requiem Mass was held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Farm St. Maher was an excellent musician and composed several masses, a volume of Benediction Services, and other music. He was for some years the Central Director in England of the Confraternity of the Apostleship of Prayer, and the Editor of the monthly serial connected with it, the 'Messenger of the Sacred Heart'. |
