  <dc:title>Letters of Bishops and Cardinals</dc:title>
<dc:description>This volume contains correspondence between members of the English Province of the Society of Jesus and cardinals and bishops of the Catholic Church. Most of the correspondence relates to: requests for testimonials from the Vicars Apostolic in favour of the Regular Clergy; property of the ex-Jesuits after their suppression; controversy and division between the Catholics of England, especially the Catholic Committee, regarding the new form of the oath of allegiance; Catholic emancipation; a new examination of the question of papal infallibility and supremacy, particularly from Fr Charles Plowden SJ, who made himself a champion of the papal cause and ally of those bishops who supported the Holy See; efforts for the restoration of the Society; seminaries abroad, particularly the Academy in Liege; and Jesuit missions across the world, including China, Mauritius, Cincinnati, and Nova Scotia. There are also some letters dealing with the appointment of the Bishop of Limerick, Ireland.

The main contributors are: Fr Philip Carteret SJ, Fr John Butler SJ, Fr Charles Plowden SJ, Bishop William Gibson, Fr William Strickland SJ, Bishop Charles Walmesley, Bishop John Douglass, Bishop Thomas Talbot, Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ, Bishop John Troy, Bishop Peter Collingridge, Bishop Thomas Penswick, Bishop Thomas Walsh, Bishop Thomas Joseph Brown, Bishop William Ullathorne, and Bishop William Turner. Most of the documents date 1752-1853, but there is an insert from the late 20th century.

There is a print out of a PDF 'Introductory Notes by F Edwards SJ' 1969 inserted at the start of the volume.
