Fr John Kavanagh went to St Francis Xavier's College, Liverpool. He was called up for military service in the First World War, but this only lasted a few months. He then went to Campion Hall, Oxford, and obtained a First in English. He taught at St Ignatius' College Stamford Hill before being sent to Heythrop, where he was ordained. He then suffered a nervous breakdown and went to a nursing home, before being sent to Petworth. Around 1934 he was sent to Mount St Mary's where he remained until he needed more nursing care. At the Mount he taught English, and ran the choir for years, as well as being excellent at golf, tennis, and rugby. Member of the English Province of the Society of Jesus.
