Lattey was born in Kensington, London on 12 May 1877. His father was a Scottish doctor. He went to school at Beaumont, starting on 19 April 1887 and staying there until August 1894. He was a good sportsman and was in the First XI for cricket in 1893 and 1894. Lattey entered the novitiate at Manresa House, Roehampton on 7 September 1894, and then did a year of juniorate, followed by Seminary, where he devoted himself to Scripture studies. Lattey went to Oxford in 1900, to an anomalous situation as Clarke’s Hall had ceased to exist due to the death of its Head, and Fr O’Fallon Pope, appointed to take over, had not yet been recognised by the university, so Lattey could not officially matriculate into the university. The University Chancellor, Dr Fowler, matriculated him anyway then retrospectively authorised this to happen. Lattey did an extra (fifth) year at Oxford to prepare for future biblical work. In 1905 he went to St Beuno’s for theology, then did a year of teaching at Beaumont. His tertianship was at the German house at Exaaten in Holland. The German language skills he acquired then set him in good stead both for academic study and for ministering to German prisoners of war in the First World War.

In 1911 he was appointed Professor of Holy Scripture at St Beuno’s, where he also taught Hebrew. While there he studied the Welsh language and did pastoral work in North Wales.

Lattey moved to Heythrop in 1926 and continued to teach Scripture and Hebrew there until 1930. He also gave courses in biblical Greek and Pauline theology.

In 1921 Lattey organised the Cambridge National Bible Congress, held as part of the celebrations for the fifteenth centenary of the death of St Jerome. From this developed the Cambridge Summer School of Catholic Studies, which was held every year until the outbreak of war in 1939.

He was a prolific academic author, with over 200 publications to his name, not including reviews. His first book, published in 1913 was his translation and notes on I Thessalonians; others included Back to Christ in 1919 and Paul in 1939
As well as academic writings, Lattey wrote pamphlets for the non-specialist, which were very successful – his pamphlet on Revelation had sold 192,000 copies by 1944.

In 1940 Lattey become Spiritual Father of the Philosophers at Heythrop, and Spiritual Father of the House in 1946.

Lattey’s health declined in the last few months of his life, which he spent initially in the Heythrop infirmary, then was moved to St Joseph’s Nursing Home in Oxford where he died on 3 September 1954. His Requiem Mass was held on 7 September 1954 at Heythrop.</Nationality>
