While he was still young the family moved to the south side of Glasgow and Jimmy, as he was known, and his brothers were educated at St Aloysius College. In 1932 he entered the Society with three of his companions from school, Vincent McAtamney, Felix McGowan, and the older brother of Stuart Skelley, who left during theology. Jimmy was followed into the Society by his two younger brothers Charles and Thomas in 1935 and 1937 respectively. Thomas left the Society from Liverpool in 1964 and Charles died in South Africa, where he had spent all his working life as a Jesuit, in 1977.

The usual course of formation followed with two years of juniorate and then philosophy at Heythrop, followed by four years regency at Stamford Hill, though some of the time was spent on evacuation in Hertfordshire. Then followed Theology at Heythrop. He was ordained at Garnethill in 1946.

In his early years after ordination he moved around quite a bit, with spells teaching at Sunderland, Barlborough, and St John's, Beaumont, and on the parish at Bournemouth. His first long appointment was on the parish at Bristol, where he was also the hospital chaplain, from 1954 to 1962. After a short spell on the parish at Mount St Mary's, Jimmy then had another eight years on the staff at Barlborough. After short spells on the parishes at Stonyhurst and Clitheroe, he returned to work in Scotland for the first time since he left for the noviceship, as parish priest in Brora. For the last fourteen years of his life was given to pastoral work in Edinburgh, both in the parish and in the Little Sisters, with a short spell in the Glasgow community. He died 4 February 2011 at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

His nephew is Fr Hugh Duffy SJ.</Nationality>
