In 1860 he returned to Britain when Bishop Wilson of Hobart identified eight boys who showed signs of a vocation and sent them to schools in Europe, which for Lander was Stonyhurst. After five years at Stonyhurst Lander entered the Society. He took a B.A. in Classical Honours at London University. He was ordained in 1880 and was made Prefect of Studies first at Glasgow and then at Mount St Mary’s, but then spent a further seven years at Mount St Mary’s as Spiritual Father. In 1902 he went to St Ignatius’ College, St Julian, Malta, as Spiritual Father but after a year became Prefect of Studies for the following five years.

In 1907 St Ignatius College in Malta was closed and Lander returned to England, but was then sent to British Guiana. There was some confusion as to his role there when he arrived, caused by a delayed letter but he was soon established as Prefect of Studies. He was happy there but the climate and the workload led to his health giving way in 1910, when he returned to England. After convalescing he served in Worcester, and when the 1st World War broke out in 1914 he went to Tisbury where he administered for ten years.

Lander moved to Craighead to assist with Retreats, but his health started to give way and on 25 March 1925 he left Craighead for St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst where he died on 10 October 1925. He was buried at Stonyhurst.</Nationality>
