He was educated at Hodder and at Belmont Abbey, and after school went into an engineering apprenticeship. He abandoned engineering in favour of horticulture on medical advice, and then abandoned both when he entered the Society at Roehampton on 7 September 1930. His younger brother Philip had joined the Society in 1928 straight from Stonyhurst. After the novitiate Prime went to Heythrop for philosophy 1932-1935, and then to Hodder for two years teaching. He returned to Heythrop for theology 1937-1941, and was ordained there on 10 July 1940. He was an RAF chaplain for the rest of the Second World War, and in 1946-1947 did his tertianship at St Beuno’s. In 1947-1948 he was on the parish staff at Stamford Hill and then Prime spent seven years (1948-1955) at St Mary’s Hall. From 1955-1958 he was variously a chaplain in a Brothers’ community in Sussex, at Petworth and assistant to the Prefect of Studies at Beaumont.

In 1958 Prime went to Guyana where he stayed until 1970, apart from the year 1965-1966 when he was in Barbados. His time in Guyana was spent at Kitty (1959-1962), Suddie (1962-1965) and Mackenzie (1968-1970). In 1970 he went to Barbados where he spent the next ten years variously as parish priest or curate at St Francis of Assisi and as chaplain to St Joseph’s Hospital. In 1980 he was violently mugged and went back to England on medical advice. The last 14 years of his life were spent at Stonyhurst, helping in the Hurst Green parish and frequently acting as guestmaster to Stonyhurst’s many visitors. Prime died unexpectedly in Blackburn Hospital on 23 June 1994, where he had gone for a minor operation.</Nationality>
