(“Joe”) Duggan was born on 30th May 1944 in Liverpool, and educated at St Francis Xavier’s school in the city. He joined the novitiate in Roehampton in 1961 at the age of 17. During his time as a novice the novitiate moved to Harlaxton, and he took his First Vows there on 8th September 1963. After three years of philosophy at Heythrop in Oxfordshire, he moved to Campion Hall to study for an MA in physics, then on to Wimbledon College to teach for a year’s regency. Next he went to Heythrop in London for a BD in theology, after which he was ordained in his home parish in Liverpool in 1973. There followed a diploma in pastoral theology, again at Heythrop. After two years on the parish staff at St Ignatius, Stamford Hill, he made his tertianship at St Beuno’s under Michael Ivens and Gerry W Hughes. Between 1977 and 1983 he worked in a number of parishes: St Michael and St John the Evangelist in Clitheroe, the Holy Name in Manchester, St Wilfrid’s, Preston, and St Ignatius, Stamford Hill, before moving to St George’s Worcester, where he stayed for seven years. It was at Clitheroe that he began to edit the Province Calendar, a job that he kept for much of the rest of his life. During those years he also represented the Province at European meetings of Jesuits involved in the charismatic renewal. After a short sabbatical, and a six-month supply in Wimbledon, he was sent to Corpus Christi, Boscombe, where he stayed until 1998, being Superior of the community from 1993. Another sabbatical, this time in Brussels, followed, after which he was appointed as parish priest in Tisbury, a position that he held until 2003. That year he became the Province’s “auditor of houses”, living initially in Stamford Hill and then at Southwell House, before combining that job with being parish priest in Clitheroe. In 2008 he joined the parish staff in Preston, becoming parish priest there two years later. In 2014he moved to Manchester, and then in 2016 on to SFX in Liverpool, where he stayed until his death. Joe Duggan died in the Royal Bournemouth Hospital last Tuesday, 24th August, after suffering a heart attack two days earlier. Joe’s Requiem Mass was held at St Francis Xavier in Liverpool on Thursday 16th September 2021.</Nationality>
