Michael was born on 16th June 1952 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and was educated at Wimbledon College. On leaving there he studied for a BD at King’s College, University of London. He entered the Society at Loyola Hall in Rainhill in 1976, and two years later was one of the first of those to take vows at the new novitiate at Manresa House in Birmingham. A one-year college course in philosophy at Heythrop in London, while living at Stamford Hill, was followed by a post-graduate teaching certificate at Campion Hall in Oxford, and then, in 1980-81, by a year in Southwell House studying counselling at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation. He then did his regency for two years engaging in pastoral work in St George’s parish in Worcester, before moving to Cambridge, Massachusetts where he studied for an MTh at the Weston School of Theology. He was ordained priest at the Holy Name, Manchester by Bishop Patrick Kelly on 6th July 1985. After a year working on the parish staff at St Ignatius, Stamford Hill, he was appointed to the parish of St Francis Xavier in Liverpool, living in the Friary community. After five years there he made his tertianship in the Philippines under Tom O’Gorman, then returned to Stamford Hill, where he worked on the parish staff at St Ignatius until 2000. In that year he enjoyed a brief sabbatical at Campion Hall, and then became parish priest of Corpus Christi, Brixton for the next five years. Between 2005 and 2014 he served on the parish staff at Sacred Heart, Wimbledon, returning for two years to Stamford Hill before an appointment to the team at St Wilfrid’s church in Preston in 2016. With failing health, he moved to the Corpus Christi community in Boscombe in June this year, and remained there until the time of his death. He died Friday 24th September 2021, in the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. He had been admitted earlier today with what was then diagnosed as sepsis. He was 69 years old, in the 46th year of religious life.
