Philip Bernard was was born in Trinidad, Trinidad & Tobago on 12 September 1855. He made his humanity course of studies at St Stanislaus’ College, Beaumont, Windsor, and entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus at Roehampton on 23 May 1875. After two years probation he studied philosophy for three years at the Seminary, Stonyhurst College. Attacked by consumption he was removed for change of air to St Beuno’s College in 1880, but with symptoms increasing, he was sent back to Trinidad & Tobago. He embarked for Trinidad & Tobago on 17 October 1881, with Fr John Hartell SJ, who accompanied him as far as Jamaica, and narrowly escaped shipwreck in a terrible storm. Eventually he succumbed to the disease at his father’s house in Trinidad, on 16 September 1882, aged just 27.
