Fr Anthony Carroll SJ was born 16 September 1722, in Ireland. He entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus at Watten, France, on 7 September 1744. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest at Liege, Belgium, in 1754, and was soon afterwards sent to serve in the Lincoln mission for some time. He was professed of the four vows 2 February 1762. After the Suppression in 1773, he accompanied Fr John Carroll SJ to Maryland, arriving there 26 June 1774. After his return to England in 1775, he served the missions of Liverpool, Shepton Mallet, Exeter, and Worcester, and died 5 September 1794, in St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, England, from injuries received during an attack upon him in Red Lion Court, Fleet Street.
